My Story
Custom pet portraits, abstract canvas art, and watercolor prints.
I painted badly for about twenty years before I painted anything I liked, and the thing I liked was a mistake — a brush I dropped that left a mark better than the one I'd been carefully making. I took early retirement from an insurance job in 2017 and have painted more or less daily since. Most of what I do now is people's dogs, which I did not see coming and would not trade.
Craft philosophy
Half of what works in a painting wasn't planned, and the job is mostly recognizing it before you paint over it. I don't sketch much anymore. I get the eyes right first — with an animal the eyes are the whole likeness, everything else is fur — and then I let the rest go where it wants. If a client wants something photographic I'll tell them honestly that they want a photographer.
