Roughly four hundred knots, one afternoon, and about three podcast episodes. The dowel is oak rather than pine because pine bows under the weight of the rope within a year — I found that out the way everyone finds things out. It arrives ready to hang with the cord already attached.
Undyed 4mm cotton rope, solid oak dowel
Knotted top down on a wall frame so gravity does the tensioning for me. I comb the fringe out at the end with a pet brush, which is the least glamorous part of the job and makes the biggest difference.
Keep it out of direct sun and don't hang it in a bathroom — cotton takes on humidity and the knots will loosen. Shake it out or run a vacuum brush over it once in a while.
